Inquiring minds want to know what is the best way to set up their website. There are so many options out there. Big Commerce, WordPress w/ Woocommerce, Shopify, Wix, Weebly, and the list goes on. Generally crafters want the same basic things from their website:
- Free or inexpensive
- Easy to set up and use
There are many reasons people choose one platform over the other. As a web developer (which was my main focus before I made crafting a focus). I recommend WordPress with Woocommerce.
You literally CANNOT beat the price! The only costs involved are your domain and hosting and SSL Certificate, which are remedial. I use GoDaddy for all of my domains, you can get your first year for $.99 and then it goes up to around $17.99/year after the first year is up.
There are many hosting providers to choose from. Lots of people use BlueHost or HostGator. GoDaddy also offers hosting, I recommend doing your own research and comparing the features of each and making an informed decision.
The last thing you will need is an SSL certificate. You can purchase one through HostDime for $30/year. This might seem like a lot, but if we add it up at the regular prices (not promotional pricing), you are looking at around $15 month, which is around half of the cost of the other options ($7.50/month for the first year).
Let’s see what you get for your money!!
WordPress is more than just a way for you to set up an eCommerce platform; it is an entirely customizable content management system. Out of the box, without installing anything ‘extra’ you will be able to sell both physical and downloadable products. You can also set up your products to be sold ‘as shown’ or offer unlimited options.
